Inar JSON Formatter
Beautify, Minify & Validate JSON — with Syntax Highlighting
A free online JSON formatter with live syntax highlighting in both the input and output editors. Paste minified or messy JSON, choose your indent style, and get clean readable output — or the tightest possible payload. Includes detailed error reporting with line and column positions for invalid JSON. Everything runs locally in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and no sign-up is required.

readyWhat is a JSON Formatter?
A tool that takes raw or minified JSON and returns clean, consistently indented output.
A JSON formatter — also called a JSON beautifier — takes a JSON string and rewrites it with consistent indentation, line breaks and spacing so it is easy to read and diff. It does not change the data: the parsed value is identical, only the textual representation differs. What changes is how easy the payload is for a human to inspect.
This formatter is built for two opposing jobs. In Format mode, it indents every level of nesting, puts each key on its own line, and can recursively sort keys alphabetically for stable diffs. In Minify mode, it strips every optional byte — whitespace, line breaks, and the last comma in each object — to produce the smallest possible payload.
Inar JSON Formatter runs entirely inside your browser. Your payload never leaves your device — there is no upload, no server call and no third-party processing.
Format, Minify & Validate
Three operations, one input. Pick whichever matches what you are doing.
Format
Beautify the JSON with configurable indentation. Each key on its own line, each array element on its own line, optional recursive key sorting, and optional compaction of short primitive arrays.
Minify
Strip every optional byte — whitespace, line breaks, and trailing commas. Produces the smallest possible JSON payload, ideal for embedding in query strings, headers or config files.
Validate
Scan for the exact line and column of syntax errors with a visual pointer, and report structural issues like duplicate keys and trailing garbage.
Features
Everything you need to clean up JSON without leaving the browser.
Syntax highlighting
Both editors render coloured markup — keys, strings, numbers, booleans, null and punctuation.
Smart beautifier
Correct nesting, consistent indentation, optional recursive key sorting and compact primitive arrays.
Minifier
Strips whitespace, line breaks and trailing commas to produce the smallest possible payload.
Detailed validator
Reports the exact line and column of syntax errors with a visual pointer to the bad character.
JSONC support
Optionally accept // line and /* */ block comments — great for config files.
Configurable
2 spaces, 4 spaces, tab or no indentation. Key sorting, unicode escaping, trailing newline.
Live statistics
Character, line and byte counts, plus object, array, key, string, number, boolean and null counts.
Copy & download
Copy the output to your clipboard or download it as a .json file.
Session persistence
Your input and options are saved to local storage between visits.
Keyboard-first
Format with Ctrl+Enter, minify with Ctrl+M, download with Ctrl+S.
Privacy first
100% client-side. Your payload never leaves your browser.
How to Use the Formatter
Five steps from messy JSON to clean, copy-ready output.
Paste or type your JSON
Drop any JSON into the input panel on the left. With Auto-format on paste enabled it will be beautified the moment it lands.
Choose your indentation
Switch between two spaces, four spaces, a hard tab, or no indentation in the Options tab. The setting is remembered between visits.
Format, minify or validate
Click Format for beautified output, Minify for the smallest possible payload, or Validate to pinpoint any syntax errors with line and column numbers.
Review the statistics
Open the Statistics tab to see byte counts, nesting depth, key counts, and a breakdown by value type.
Copy or download
Hit Copy output to place the result on your clipboard, or Download to save it as a
.jsonfile.
Formatting Tips
Small things that produce a noticeably better result.
Sort keys for stable diffs
Enabling Sort keys recursively orders object keys alphabetically. If you commit JSON to git, this avoids spurious diffs caused by key re-ordering in upstream services.
Minify for transport
Always develop with formatted JSON and minify only for shipping — query strings, JWT payloads, and configuration files all benefit from the smaller size.
Point to the exact character
When validation fails, the report shows the exact line and column with a visual pointer. Copy that into your editor's "Go to line" command to jump straight to the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about formatting JSON.
What is a JSON formatter?
A JSON formatter (or beautifier) takes a JSON string and rewrites it with consistent indentation, line breaks and spacing so it is easier for a human to read. It does not change the parsed value.
Is my JSON uploaded anywhere?
No. Inar JSON Formatter runs entirely in your browser. Your payload is processed locally and never leaves your device.
Does formatting change the data?
No. Whitespace between tokens is insignificant in JSON. The parsed value is identical — only the textual representation changes.
What is minification?
Minification removes whitespace, line breaks, indentation and trailing commas — every byte that does not affect the parsed value. It produces the smallest possible JSON payload.
Can I sort keys alphabetically?
Yes. Turn on Sort keys in the Options tab and every object is recursively re-ordered alphabetically by key. Useful for stable git diffs.
What about comments in JSON?
Standard JSON does not allow comments, but many tools (VS Code settings, tsconfig.json, etc.) support JSONC. Turn on Allow comments to accept // line and /* */ block comments. Comments are stripped from the formatted output.
Does it handle large files?
Yes. The parser is iterative and can handle multi-megabyte payloads. Syntax highlighting is automatically skipped above roughly 400 KB to keep typing smooth, but formatting and minifying still work.
Can I escape non-ASCII characters?
Yes. Turn on Escape non-ASCII and characters like é and 😀 are written as \u00e9 and \ud83d\ude00. Useful for ASCII-safe transport.
Does the validator check the JSON schema?
No. The validator performs a syntactic check only — it verifies that the payload is valid JSON and reports the exact line and column of any syntax error. It does not check against a JSON Schema.
Is the JSON Formatter free?
Yes. Inar JSON Formatter is completely free to use, with no account, no sign-up and no usage limits.
