What Is HEX to CMYK Conversion?

From screen light to printer ink.

A hex code describes a color as emitted light — three bytes for red, green and blue, mixed additively on a screen. CMYK describes a color as reflected light — four inks (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) layered subtractively on paper. They are two different physical models of color, not two notations for the same thing.

Converting #f2a93b to CMYK gives cmyk(0%, 30%, 76%, 5%) using the standard mathematical formula. That value is a reasonable starting point for print work, but it is not a colour-managed conversion: a real press, ink set and paper stock will render it differently. That is why professional print workflows use ICC profiles rather than simple arithmetic.

For digital work, the CMYK value is best treated as a reference — the RGB and hex values in this tool are the ones your screen actually displays, and the WCAG contrast figures describe what your users will see.

RGB has a much wider gamut than CMYK. Vivid, saturated screen colors — especially bright oranges, greens and cyans — cannot be reproduced exactly in ink. Expect visible shifts.

The Conversion, Step by Step

Normalise, extract black, then derive the three inks.

  1. Decode the hex code into three channels

    Split the six digits into three pairs and parse each as base 16. For #f2a93b: f2 = 242 red, a9 = 169 green, 3b = 59 blue.

  2. Normalise to the 0–1 range

    Divide each channel by 255. The orange becomes R′ = 0.949, G′ = 0.663, B′ = 0.231.

  3. Extract the black key from the darkest channel

K = 1 − max(R′, G′, B′). Here max is 0.949, so K = 0.051 — about 5%. Black is pulled out first so the remaining inks only need to describe the hue.

  4. Derive cyan, magenta and yellow

    For each channel: C = (1 − R′ − K) / (1 − K), and likewise for M and Y. With R′ already at max, C = 0%. G′ gives M ≈ 30%, B′ gives Y ≈ 76%.

  5. Reverse the formula to get back to RGB

R = 255 × (1 − C) × (1 − K), and likewise for green and blue. This exact inverse is why the hex code round-trips precisely in this tool.

Why CMYK Behaves Differently

Subtractive ink is not the same as additive light.

RGB is additive

Start from black and add light. Full red, green and blue together make white. Screens, phones, projectors and anything with a backlight use this model — and it covers a very wide, vivid gamut.

CMYK is subtractive

Start from white paper and layer ink, which absorbs light. Cyan absorbs red, magenta absorbs green, yellow absorbs blue. Overprint all three and you get a muddy brown, which is why a separate black ink exists.

Gamut matters

Because the models differ, some screen colors simply cannot be printed. Converting back from CMYK to RGB always succeeds, but converting a vivid RGB to CMYK may land outside what the press can actually lay down.

How to Convert HEX to CMYK

Four steps from a hex code to a usable print value.

  1. Enter your hex code

Type or paste it into the big hex field. The # prefix is optional and three-digit shorthand is expanded automatically.

  2. Read the CMYK values

Cyan, magenta, yellow and black appear instantly in the four readout cells above the sliders, along with the full cmyk() string in the format fields.

  3. Adjust the mix if needed

Drag any of the four ink sliders to tune the balance. Every other format recalculates live, and the hex field updates to match.

  4. Check contrast, then copy or export

Confirm the color passes the WCAG level you need for digital use, then copy the cmyk() value or export a full CSS block for the web equivalent.

Conversion Tips

Things worth knowing before you send that file to print.

K-only vs rich black

Large areas of solid black look flat when printed with K alone. A "rich black" adds cyan, magenta and yellow underneath — typically something like cmyk(60%, 40%, 40%, 100%). Never use rich black for small body text, since misregistration turns it blurry.

Total ink coverage

Add the four percentages together to get total ink coverage. Many presses cap this around 300%, and coated stocks tolerate less than uncoated. If your total is above 300%, reduce the individual channels.

Convert once, then confirm

Simple mathematical conversion is a starting point, not a specification. Ask your printer for their ICC profile or a proof before committing to a critical brand color.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about HEX and CMYK colors.

How do I convert HEX to CMYK?

Decode the hex code into three RGB channel values, normalise them to 0–1, then apply the standard formula: K = 1 − max(R′, G′, B′), and for each channel C = (1 − R′ − K) / (1 − K), and likewise for M and Y. For example #f2a93b becomes cmyk(0%, 30%, 76%, 5%).

Is the CMYK conversion accurate for print?

It is mathematically correct but not colour-managed. Real print output depends on the specific inks, the paper stock, the press and its ICC profile. Treat the numbers here as a starting point and always confirm critical colors with your print provider.

What does the K in CMYK stand for?

Key — as in the key plate, the printing plate that carries the black separation. Some people say it stands for "blacK" to avoid confusion with B for blue, but the traditional printing term is key.

Why can't I print every color I see on screen?

Because RGB and CMYK have different gamuts. Screens emit light additively and can produce very vivid, bright colors. Ink reflects light subtractively and physically cannot reproduce the most saturated cyans, greens and oranges. Those colors shift or clip when printed.

What is a rich black?

A black built from all four inks rather than black alone. A typical rich black might be cmyk(60%, 40%, 40%, 100%), which prints as a deeper, denser black than plain K-only black. It should not be used for small text.

Can I convert CMYK back to hex?

Yes — R = 255 × (1 − C) × (1 − K), and likewise for green and blue, then encode the three values as hex. The reverse conversion always produces a valid RGB color, though the result may look slightly different from the original screen color.

Why is there a separate black ink if C, M and Y can make black?

Overprinting cyan, magenta and yellow gives a muddy dark brown rather than a true black, and it uses three times as much ink. A dedicated black ink gives cleaner text, sharper edges and lower ink coverage, so K was added as a fourth channel.

What is total ink coverage?

The sum of the four CMYK percentages. Most presses have a maximum — often around 300% for coated stock — because too much ink will not dry properly and can smudge or set off onto other sheets.

How is contrast ratio calculated?

Contrast ratio uses relative luminance, a measure of perceived brightness. The formula is (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the lighter color. It ranges from 1:1 (identical) to 21:1 (black on white).

Is my color data uploaded anywhere?

No. The entire conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored beyond your own device.

Is this converter free?

Yes. It is completely free to use, with no account, no sign-up and no usage limits.
